Overall Job Description

Assist in the ongoing development & implementation of a community based Therapeutic Recreation program.

Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Instructs designated recreation classes according to program curriculum and philosophy.
  2. Prepares, attends and participates in necessary staff training, in-services, meetings, and contribute to the therapeutic service plan.
  3. Completes all assignments and items on intern orientation checklist.
  4. Communicates openly and effectively with supervisor, other city staff, participants, parents/care givers, and volunteers to provide excellent customer service.
  5. Completes attendance forms, volunteer hours and performance sheets, time sheets, program, participant, volunteer & intern evaluation forms, and other documentation as assigned by supervisor.
  6. Implements a minimum of one hour of training to program volunteers regarding program procedures, safety, participant abilities and needs, and volunteer rights and responsibilities.
  7. Involves all participants and volunteers in program activities. Responsible for the direct supervision of participants during programs and for modeling appropriate behavior management for participants and volunteers.
  8. Complies with City policies and procedures and EXPAND program standards.
  9. Responsible for the safety of self, participants and volunteers. Takes proper safety precautions, anticipates unsafe circumstances and acts accordingly to prevent accidents within the risk management guidelines.  Reports any safety hazards to supervisor.  Responsible for the proper use and care of materials, equipment, site and facilities.  Reports any accidents/incidents to supervisor and completes the appropriate forms to submit to supervisor within 24 hours.
  10. Reads and is responsible for all information provided in Intern Manual.
  11. Completes other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  12. Assesses participants in each program & makes changes as needed to accommodate their needs.
  13. Develop individual participant goals & strategies for implementation.
  14. Evaluates all programs & make changes as needed.
  15. Responds positively to concerns of person served, relevant others, staff & community.
  16. Advocate for rights to accessible quality health and leisure services.
  17. Advocate for inclusionary services.
  18. Provide support and education to the person served and relevant others.
  19. Promote the agency, TR Services, and the profession through marketing and public relations activities.
  20. Maintain and expand professional competence and credentials.
  21. Maintain knowledge of current TR trends, techniques, methods, issues, and professional and legal standards.

Supervision

Interns are supervised by full time Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists.

Requirements/Qualifications

  1. Previous experience working with individuals with a variety of disabilities.
  2. Completion of therapeutic course work.
  3. Provided evidence of an acceptable driving record.
  4. Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  5. Ability to be courteous and effective with the public and to provide good customer service.
  6. Current certification in CPR and First Aid.

Hours

You are required to work 40 hours a week for 15 weeks. This equals to 600 hours. This may include evening and weekend hours

Benefits

This internship comes with a $1,500 stipend given in two payments of $750 at week 8 and week 16. Interns also receive a recreation center pass for the duration of their internship which gives access to all three recreation centers.

Risk and Release

I, the undersigned, agree for myself or for my minor child/ward, to volunteer for the City of Boulder, and understand and agree to the following:

  1. I will follow instructions of my placement and perform my service to the best of my ability.
  2. I acknowledge that there are dangers and risks incurred as a result of participating in activities connected or associated with volunteering; and I knowingly assume all risk for any injuries, death, damage or loss to my person, including but not limited to: falling down, tripping, bumping; back, bone, joint, head, neck, muscle or spinal injuries or strains; cuts, scrapes; choking; allergies; heat stroke, heat exhaustion, sunburn or other injuries; and/or any damage or loss sustained to my personal property.
  3. In the event of any emergency, I authorize City of Boulder officials to secure from any licensed hospital, physician and/or medical personnel any treatment deemed necessary for my immediate care, including ambulance transport. Further, I agree that I will be responsible for payment of any and all medical services rendered.
  4. I agree to pay for any intentional damage sustained to City property as a result of my participation in activities. Payment shall be made directly to the City of Boulder within thirty days of receipt of damage invoice.
  5. I waive and relinquish all claims I may have as a result of my participation as a volunteer against the City of Boulder and its officers, agents, servants and employees. Further I agree to indemnify, defend and hold harmless the city of Boulder against any claims already made and claims that may be made in the future.
  6. I act only as an authorized volunteer and do not function as an employee, agent or representative of the City of Boulder.
  7. I give permission for media coverage of myself and/or my minor child/ward to be disseminated for public relations purposes without personal compensation.
  8. This Acknowledgement of Risk and Release is valid for a period of 1 year from the date executed below.
  9. I understand that volunteers can be let go at any time.

VOLUNTEER RIGHTS

While serving as an Authorized Volunteer for the benefit of, and involved in the activities at the request of, the City of Boulder, volunteers are provided the protection of the Colorado Governmental Immunity Act, Colorado Revised Statutes Section 24-10-101 (et. Seq.); 24-10-103(4)(a) and are subject to the applicable provisions of the Act. The Act does not cover any willful and/or wanton behavior including, but not limited to, sexual harassment, racial or gender discrimination, drug and/or alcohol use.


I acknowledge and understand the terms of the City of Boulder’s Risk and Release Form. This acknowledgment of risk and release shall not be modified orally. All minor’s signature must be accompanied by the signature of the parent or guardian.
