Your Place in the Universe: First Magnitude (Self-Guided)

Earth & Sky

Time: Evening after 10:00pm Location: East Boulder or any place with a great view of the night sky. Optional Materials: A sky chart or a smartphone with your favorite night sky or star app downloaded to help you identify stars and planets below as reference. Background: There are eight celestial bodies of first magnitude or greater visible in the early October skies. In order of brightness: Jupiter, Vega, Capella, Saturn, Altair, Aldebaran, Fomalhaut and Deneb. Did you know that Deneb is one of the farthest stars you can see without a telescope? It’s estimated to be about 1,600 or more light years away, yet it still appears in our skies as a first magnitude star. If Deneb were placed at the distance of say, Altair or Vega, it would glow as bright as the full moon and be visible during the day! Your Mission: This month’s challenge is to see if you can find all eight listed celestial bodies! Check them all off your list! Register for a reminder in your inbox!
