Recreation & Skills - All Ages

The CU Museum of Natural History and the City of Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks (OSMP) are teaming up for a rare cultural and educational adventure for the ages: Each educational excursion will start at the CU Museum (see link below for directions) for a tour of the Unearthed: Ancient Life in Boulder Valley exhibit featuring 83 rare stone tools, which were discovered in 2008 in the shadow of the Flatirons and are now known as the Mahaffy Cache. High tech scientific research tells us the stories of the tools that were used 130 centuries ago. Following the Museum tour, groups will be transported to Open Space and Mountain Park’s Annex (7315 Red Deer Drive off of 75th Street) for a rare opportunity to experience an ancient throwing technology over 30,000 years old. In this interactive program, Christian Driver of OSMP’s Cultural Resources Program takes you through a historical journey of Boulder as you learn about the animals that used to inhabit this area, and how native peoples may have used Atlatl spear throwing technology to make the Boulder Valley their home. The program is free, but advance registration is required. A maximum of 20 people per session may participate. Each session includes exploration at the CU Museum, instruction and opportunities to throw atlatls on Boulder Open Space, and transportation between the museum and the hunting site. Participants will need to sign a risk and release waiver prior to participating. Please bring one liter of water and comfortable clothing. Rain or shine. So ride your bike, take the bus, or park your car near the museum and let us transport you back in time. Appropriate for kids 5 and up with an adult.

Maximum Participants: 20
