Do all the best birds fly south for the winter? No way! Some of our most beautiful—and comical—residents stay here all year long. Naturalist Dave Sutherland will lead a winter bird watching expedition on Enchanted Mesa so you can meet these little feathered marvels (and maybe an Abert's squirrel - who knows?). Bring binoculars, bird guides, and dress for the weather. Please bring strap-on traction for footwear (e.g. micro-spikes or Yak-tracks) since the trail may be very slick and icy. Meet at the Chautauqua Ranger Cottage for an easy walk around Enchanted Mesa. Please leave dogs at home. Suitable for all ages.

Dave is an award-winning field naturalist and interpreter who served 24 years with Boulder's Open Space and Mountain Parks, retiring in 2020. He still leads nature hikes on birds, bugs, rocks, flowers, gardening with native plants, stars, local history and much more. Dave has guided education programs in Idaho, California, Costa Rica and the Galapagos Islands. He is a natural science geek who uses games and activities to inspire others with his love of nature.
